Independence Pledge
By Colleen Marlett
I Pledge;
To never say “my cancer”, as that is an ownership I do not want.
To be first a mother, sister, daughter, wife and friend, while fighting this disease.
To keep my identity and not lose myself in what the treatment will do.
To only lend a short moment of thought to the unknown, and think positively at all other possible moments in life.
To look to the future and see what will be, while looking in the mirror and seeing what is right now.
To make a promise today to live a healthier lifestyle, so I can help myself.
To make peace
To be the best “me” I can be, so that others may live by my example
To not live my life in increments, as life is much more than three month intervals
To accept and then fight
To never be defined as a “Cancer Patient” or “Cancer Survivor”, but as the courageous and vital woman I am and will become because of this journey
I pledge to be Free of this disease for good no matter what the future may hold
Today is my Independence Day
